About Royal Melbourne Golf Club

The Royal Melbourne Golf Club is a 36 hole championship golf course in Black Rock, Victoria, a few miles outside of Melbourne, Australia.

Founded by Sir James McBain in 1895, Royal Melbourne’s West is considered to be one of the best courses in the world, and has hosted PGA and LPGA Tour events. Known for its dramatic undulation, fertile soil, and natural appearance, the West Course highlights the beauty of Melbourne and provides an unforgettable golf experience.

West Course highlights include bold bunkering while the rough areas around the tees and bunkers are a mix of native grasses which naturally frame each hole, providing great definition and contrast. The greens are brilliant and for decades have consistently provided the finest putting surfaces in Australia. They are large and beautifully contoured they are built to accommodate approaches from a number of angles with each progressively more difficult the further the tee shot strays from the perfect line.

The West was designed by famed British landscape architect Alister Mackenzie. Mackenzie created the original design for Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters.

Alister MacKenzie’s 1926 routing fits snuggly into the contours of the rolling sandbelt land. His greens are miniature versions of the surrounding topography. His crisp bunkering, with vertical edges a foot or more tall, chew into fairways and putting surfaces. Most holes dogleg, so distance means nothing and angle into the pin is everything.

The greens are considered to be the best in Australia. Royal Melbourne Golf Club is known for its large and intricate green designs that are contoured to accommodate approaches from a number of different angles

Royal Melbourne’s West Course was rated :

No. 1 in Australia by Readers Golf Digest in 2014
No. 5 in Golf Digest’s 200 Greatest International Courses 2018
No. 2 Best Course Outside the US by Golf Digest

The course has hosted 16 Australian Opens, The Presidents Cup, and the Women’s Australian Open.
